Characteristics of God

Part One

It is essential to understand the characteristics of God so you know who He is and who He is not.  To have a meaningful relationship with God depends on the correct knowledge of Him. You must get to know His nature.

The Bible informs us of God’s nature and character—his divine attributes.

  1. God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in His being.

  2. God is wise, powerful, holy, both good and great, just, and true.

  3. God is all-sufficient but not able to be understood fully.

  4. God is everywhere present and knowing all things.

So, let’s look at the first point—God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in His being.

Spirit - God does not compose of matter. He is Spirit.

Let’s go to the Word

  • John 4:24 states, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (ESV)

Infinite/Eternal - God is never-ending, knows no boundaries. God always has been and will forever be. He dwells in eternity.

Let’s go to the Word:

  • Isaiah 40:28 says that “...The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth…”  (ESV)

  • Deuteronomy 33:27 states, “The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms…” (ESV)

Unchangeable - unable to be changed by forces within the universe because God created the universe. He transcends space and time. Simply put, God never changes.

Let’s go to the Word:

  • Malachi 3:6 says, “For I the Lord do not change…” (ESV)
